Standing up for the unborn

On Saturday afternoon we had the Rally for Life in Brisbane, a chance for pro-life people from many different sectors of the city and beyond to come together and give public witness to the sanctity of human life, and especially the pre-born child.

The pro-life cause works on many fronts.  We try to raise awareness of what abortion is, and help people see the truth.  We work to assist women (and their partners, families) who are facing unexpected and perhaps unwanted pregnancies, with counselling and practical assistance including crisis accomodation.  We work to help bring healing to women who have had an abortion through programmes like Rachel’s Vineyard.  We work to support pro-life politicians who will help to ensure that our laws give voice to the dignity of human life in all its stages.

Having seen the devastating and long lasting effects of abortion on women (and also men, which may not be as obvious) for myself is one of the reasons I take an active part in this work.  I want to do what I can to prevent babies being killed, but also to spare people the emotional trauma that abortion brings.  Abortion is not the only option, and there are people here to help and support those facing difficulty because of pregnancy.

Perhaps in future years we might have a march through the city streets as more people come on board to speak up for the unborn.

Day 23 of the 40 Days for Life

Many know the pain of abortion — including men.

After my talk, a man with passion in his face and tears in his eyes shook my hand and shared how his past sin of abortion is still deep in his heart.

Men can play a large role in an abortion. They can abandon women when they hear they’re pregnant. They can encourage, and many times pay for, the abortion.
Their mistakes are real, but so is their pain.

Other fathers are told they have no rights, no voice … and they can do nothing to stop an abortion. And that, too, can hurt deeply.

40 Days for Life

Today’s prayer intention: We pray for the strength to love those who do not love us.

On average, there are 3,300 abortions EVERY DAY in the United States — but that daily number goes up on Saturdays, the busiest day of the week at many abortion centers.

Today’s prayer intention: We pray for a flowering of the joy of parenthood.

Heavenly Father, please keep me from taking for
granted the gift of children. Help us to remember
this heritage that you have given us. Make us
faithful stewards of these precious lives, that each
generation might be raised in the nurture and
admonition of the Lord. We ask this through Jesus
Christ our Lord, Amen.

Yesterday, students from my school – Saint Paul University, Ottawa – took our turn [with a few other helpers too!] to fill the slots on the vigil roster for praying at the downtown abortion mill during the 40 Days for Life.  I also took one of the slots for proclaiming the Scriptures.  Here in Ottawa during the 40 Days for Life, the Bible is proclaimed from beginning to end where we pray over the road from the abortion mill.  It was very cold yesterday morning, and on my way home after praying we actually had snow (although I hear that snow has fallen in odd parts of Australia in recent days – odd for this time of year – so I suppose news of snow is no big deal to those back home)!  Here’s a photo of me from yesterday during the Proclamation of the Word:

This Sunday, 14 October 2012, is the mid-point in the current 40 Days for Life campaign.

Following are the details for the Mid-point Rally on Sunday evening:

Sun. Oct.14, 2012, 7:00PM – 8:00 PM @ Ground Zero 65 Bank Street, Ottawa – Candlelight Vigil – Archbishop Prendergast to give a reflection, John Pacheco (Pro-Life Activist & Blogger), Doris G. (Helpers of God Precious Infants), Jennifer Snell, Deacon Charles and Marcel Dion on Vocals!  Come out for an awe inspiring event as we mark the Year of the Faith in the Pro Life Movement!

Archbishop Terrence Prendergast greeting some of those gathered after Vespers on 11 October 2012

Archbishop Prendergast presided at Vespers in Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica, Ottawa, yesterday evening to mark the beginning of the Year of Faith.  There was a good presence of pastors and other parish representatives.  Towards the end of the service, candles were lighted and the faith was professed using the Apostles Creed.

Yesterday, 11 October, was the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.  I was pleased that the Archbishop, in his homily, acknowledged that the aftermath of Vatican II is not without contention.  The Archbishop encouraged us to “see the good” in those who hold different views than us.

How we face this tension is going to be important in the years ahead.  Thanks be to God we have Pope Benedict XVI who is leading the way in helping us to understand how to properly interpret the Conciliar teachings.  We must follow the Pope!

Some more – blurry! – photos from last night can be found here.

Today, during the 40 Days for Life, students of Saint Paul University are covering the times on the vigil roster for praying at the abortion mill at 65 Bank Street Ottawa.  I’m about to head down there for my hour, and I’ll also be taking one of the slots for the proclamation of the scriptures.  During the 40 Days for Life here in Ottawa, the Bible is proclaimed from beginning to end at the abortion mill, as a sign that this is a prayerful campaign asking God to change hearts.

Day 16 of the 40 Days for Life

Today’s prayer intention: Pray for the mothers going into pregnancy help centers.  The personal care, the free ultrasound, the ongoing practical help is designed to deliver them from those who profit in shedding innocent blood.

Father, hear our prayer! Snatch desperate mothers from the fire. Bring them out of our abortion businesses and into our pregnancy help centers. Deliver them from evil. Use us to help them chose life and see your hand of provision.

Today I also came across a prayer that the Church in Ireland is using for their Choose Life Month of Prayer, which runs from October 7 to November 6, 2012:

Choose Life: Prayer for the Child in the Womb

Lord Jesus, you are the source and lover of life.
Reawaken in us respect for every human life.

Help us to see in each child the marvellous
work of our Creator.
Open our hearts to welcome every child as a
unique and wonderful gift.

Guide the work of doctors, nurses and
midwives.
May the life of a mother and her baby in the
womb be equally cherished and respected.

Help those who make our laws to uphold the
uniqueness and sacredness of every human life,
from the first moment of conception to natural
death.

Give us wisdom and generosity to build a
society that cares for all.

Together with Mary, your Mother,
in whose womb you took on our human
nature,
Help us to choose life in every decision we
take.

We ask this in the joyful hope of eternal life
with you, and in the communion of the
Blessed Trinity.

Amen.

Our Lady of Knock, pray for us.
All the Saints of Ireland, pray for us.

Day 15 of the 40 Days for Life

Today’s prayer intention:  May God’s people awaken to the fact that we are our brothers’ keepers.

Father, help us to embrace the fact that we are our “brother’s keeper.” When, due to selfish motives, we try to cast off this responsibility please call to us to account. We would be pleasing to you and to our “brother.” Through the help and grace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Day 14 of the 40 Days for Life

Today’s prayer intention:  Abortion is the great “no.” May all of God’s people have the freedom and grace to say “yes” to His marvelous plans.
