World Youth Day “week” is upon us.  The Pope arrives on Thursday.  Please pray for all the WYD pilgrims: that this will truly be a life-changing encounter with Christ.  The theme of this WYD, quoting St Paul, is: Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith (cf. Col 2:7).   Daily updates following the Melbourne pilgrims can be seen on apriestdownunder.

An interesting report on CathNews caught my eye today, in which Archbishop Hickey of Perth (about to retire, being 75) says he wished he had spoken up more about social issues.  Read it here.  He might be around a little longer, so there’s still time!  I’d be interested to hear what he has to say.  Other bishops can take note!

Monday August 15th is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary [a Holy Day of Obligation in Australia].  Happy Feast Day to all Cistercian monks, whose patronal feast is today!  Speaking of Cistercians, the most recent newsletter of Australia’s Cistercian Community is available here.
